after seeing the zine I published my professors asked if they could hire me to teach the class how to publish news documents. Now I'm teaching on what would be my week off, but all worth it, to save up for Venezuela!
Today will be my last day of the quarter, hence I am up at 1:00am... I am very excited to be done and have a break soon!

Fundraiser - Secret Café
Some of my classmates and I organized a fundraiser for Saturday night - a "Secret Café" - or a night of selling food without a license. We dumpstered most of the food, and had the rest donated and used a local restaurant for the night to serve dinner by donation to Olympia. We made $1,000!!! The night was a blast, local bands played, the food was delicious, as two local chefs also donated their time, and put up with us trying to help them in the kitchen! The money is going in a scholarship fund which those of us who are going to venezuela may apply for.

Comida por la Gente - Food for the People

Tomorrow I am presenting part of my year long project to my class. My focus is on how politics control food and agriculture in Venezuela, as well as food sovereignty (a country growing all of its own food).
To download my power point that goes with my presentation you can click here - then in the address bar at top where it says http://us.share.geocities.... replace "us.share" with www and hit enter ( http://www.geocities.com/reggae_rocker74/FOOD.ppt ). Only works if you have powerpoint - yes mom, you have powerpoint.

Life Lesson - Feeding Yourself
Everything in my cupboard - lucky it all goes together well.
I decided if i make mass amounts of food at the begging of the week i wont have to make lunch every morning to take to class! (My room mates all think I'm crazy - but they also all eat mac n cheese at least twice a day.)
I also learned how to make dressing (to go on my medley)- apparently very easy, but never before necessary when someone else was feeding me.

grad school fair
I went to the Graduate School Fair at my school today. There were many schools represented, and I spent a lot of time talking to Law School reps and asking questions. I also talked to a gal from peace corp. It was really helpful to get an idea of what I need to be doing over the next couple of years (writing, Lsat prep, volunteer, study abroad and get good grades). My goodness there's a lot of work! But it's very exciting to think about.

beautiful day
Today was a beautiful day in olympia. Sunny for once!
I had morning classes, lunch with my professor - we had a great talk!, and then I went to my friend katie's house, where we cooked a huge dinner for the homeless camp. We made great soup, and took it over - they seemed to really appreciate it. It was a great afternoon cooking, Katie's house has a big yard, adn they have apple trees and a press, so we also made apple cider, it was very fun.

Pictures of Olympia
My photography assignment this week was to learn how to check out a camera from media loan, and then use it. My friend Jorie and I walked around downtown and took pictures - and found some interesting things. These two men were sitting in their yard playing video games, while directly next door there was a wedding happening - from which the children had escaped. The rest was found in the alley behind these events.

una neuva semana
Una nueva semana, y yo aun estoy confundo de la semana pasado!
Today, among many other things, I had a two hour lecture in Spanish, about the politics of Latin America. Did I say in SPANISH.
Tomorrow I am going to my second photography class - we actually get cameras this week. The photography classes, as well as multimedia classes are centered around journalism, and connected to our studies with Venezuela.
I will soon be starting my documentary project, which I am focusing on a local self governed tent city, Camp Quixote. I'm planning on posting as I go!
This week we are reading a book about Hugo Chavez, it's rather one sided, but it's very interesting to learn about the politics of another country.

Apartment & Roommates
We have a nice little 3 bedroom apartment. We're still all getting adjusted. My roommates are Jen & Amanda - but their boys are usually around as well - so it's a full house. We usually cook and eat together, as well as clean - it's a nice little family.

Amanda cooking & Jen running to see why I'm taking pictures.

Ben (Jen's boyfriend) moving a bookcase up stairs.

Abhi helping in the kitchen.
First Day of School
My first day was great!
My class is VERY intense, and very diverse. My faculty both seem very knowledgable and are enthusiastic about the program. Today we had an economics lecture, followed by a seminar on the book Open Veins of Latin America, and then a Spanish test.
It has been a very exciting day!

A first day picture with my backpack... to add to the collection.
This year I am taking Venzuela: Building Economic and Social Justice (click to read about it).
